Orthopedists are experts in sports injuries, arthritis, joint replacement,
and anything that involves the musculoskeletal system (the bones, joints,
ligaments, tendons, and connective tissues). At Cody Regional Health,
we use proven diagnostic procedures and state-of-the-art technology to
determine what is causing your bone or muscle pains so we can put together
your customized treatment plan. We will always recommend the least invasive
treatments, except in cases where surgery is the recommended first-line
treatment. However, many orthopaedic conditions can be treated with “RICE”
– that is, rest, ice, compression, and elevation of the injured
extremity.
Foot and Ankle Injuries: Foot and ankle injuries include the injuries in the leg below the knee.
They are especially common among athletes who play sports such as football,
hockey, and skating. Treatment for some of these conditions may be orthotics,
braces, physical therapy, injections, or surgery. Common sports injuries
include sprains and strains, ankle fractures, and Achilles tendonitis.
Shoulder Injuries: Shoulder pain may be from a torn ligament or dislocation. These may be
caused by overuse of the shoulder while playing sports. Simple pain or
acute injuries may be treated with conservative treatment, and chronic
injuries may require surgical treatment.
Hip Injuries: Fractures of the femur bone, labral tear affecting the hip. These injuries
require immediate medical intervention to avoid further complications.
Rehabilitation programs and physical therapy is often recommended following
the medical intervention, where you need to perform specific exercises
to strengthen the muscles and improve the movements.
Knee Injuries: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is a major stabilizing ligament in the
knee which may tear with overuse or from a sports injury. Other common
knee injuries are cartilage damage and meniscal tears. Knee injuries may
require surgical intervention performed using open surgical or minimally
invasive techniques. Your surgeon will recommend you for physical therapy
to strengthen your muscles, improve elasticity, and improve the movements
of the bones and joints.
Total Joint Replacement is a surgical procedure where damaged joints are
removed and replaced with metal, plastic, or ceramic devices. Patients
may undergo joint replacement procedures for dysfunctional hips, knees,
and shoulders. Joint replacement is considered as a treatment option when
severe joint pain or dysfunction is not alleviated by less-invasive therapies.
When only some of the joints are damaged, a surgeon may be able to repair
or replace just the damaged parts. When the entire joint is damaged, a
total joint replacement is done. To replace a total hip or knee joint,
a surgeon removes the diseased or damaged parts and inserts artificial
parts, called prostheses or implants.
Minimally Invasive Surgery
With less intrusiveness into the body combined with the skill in using
a variety of techniques to operate, it means patients experience less
pain, fewer complications, and shorter hospital stays, and faster heal time.
