Understanding Your Bill
Billing with Insurance: Three Steps
- Know Your Benefits – Contact your insurance company before any procedure to obtain any required preauthorization or certification.
- Provide Your Insurance – During registration, share all current insurance information. CRH will bill your insurance and monitor your claim. Your insurance company will send you an Explanation of Benefits (EOB) showing how your claim was processed.
- Pay Any Remaining Balance – After your insurance pays its portion, CRH will send you a bill for any remaining balance.
How to Read Your Bill
Your bill can generally be understood in three parts:
- What the hospital charged: The original charge for your services.
- What your insurance allowed and paid: The amount allowed under your insurance contract, paid according to your plan's benefits.
- What your insurance says you owe: Your patient responsibility, such as a deductible, copayment, or coinsurance, as shown on your EOB.
Why You May Receive More Than One Bill
Depending on your care, you may receive separate bills from different departments. If you are seen in a hospital-based department, you may also receive two charges for one visit. These are not duplicates:
- Facility charge: Covers the hospital's resources, including the room or treatment area, nursing staff, equipment, supplies, laboratory, and imaging.
- Professional charge: Covers your provider's services, including the exam, medical history, diagnosis, medical decisions, and treatment plan.
Example: An Emergency Department visit for abdominal pain may result in a facility bill for the emergency department, nursing care, labs, imaging, and medications, plus a professional bill for the physician's evaluation and treatment plan.
