About Kyla

Dr. Kyla Carlson is a board-certified obstetrician and gynecologist at Cody Regional Health, bringing more than a decade of experience caring for women through all stages of life. Her practice reflects what she values most about obstetrics and gynecology: the opportunity to build lasting relationships, provide a wide variety of care, and support women during some of life’s most pivotal moments. A Wyoming native who grew up in Wheatland, Dr. Carlson earned undergraduate degrees in Zoology/Physiology and English from the University of Wyoming. She went on to earn her Doctor of Osteopathy degree from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed a traditional rotating osteopathic internship at MetroHealth Hospital. She completed her postgraduate training in Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency at Spectrum Health/Michigan State University in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Dr. Carlson entered medical school planning to pursue a career in a rural community. During her third-year medical school rotations, she fell in love with catching babies and performing surgery, quickly realizing that obstetrics and gynecology was the perfect fit. Her dedication to serving patients in a rural area persisted beyond training, and upon completion of residency, she looked at job opportunities in Wyoming, Colorado, and Montana. She chose to begin her medical career in Billings, Montana, and practiced there for over 14 years as an attending physician and business partner with Billings OB/Gyn Associates. Dr. Carlson gained experience in caring for some of the region's most critical obstetric cases and performing minimally invasive gynecologic surgeries. She left clinical practice briefly in early 2026 to pursue interests in clinical education at Rocky Vista University - Montana College of Osteopathic Medicine. While an educator at heart, she missed what brought her to OB/Gyn in the first place, and now returns to clinical practice in Cody. She hopes her clinical experience and teaching can help prepare future physicians with connections to the region and encourage young physicians to return to rural areas where doctors are in short supply. Dr. Carlson values the variety obstetrics and gynecology provides, from outpatient women’s healthcare and surgery to pregnancy care and deliveries. She is particularly passionate about helping women feel their best, also supporting them through healthy pregnancies and safe deliveries. Of OB/Gyn practice, Dr. Carlson says, “It is a privilege to care for women during some of their most vulnerable and life-changing moments. Helping a family welcome its newest member is incredibly meaningful, and I truly cannot picture myself doing anything else.”

Dr. Carlson describes her approach to patient care as straightforward, honest, and collaborative. She believes patients should understand their condition, their potential options for care, and the potential risks and benefits of each approach. She expects patients to be active participants in decisions about their health, and will take the time needed to be sure all concerns are addressed. “Caring for patients is a partnership,” Dr. Carlson said. “I want to provide clarity, while also being compassionate and kind.” That philosophy extends to all patients in her care, whether for a single surgical consultation or many years of care. Regardless of how long she is part of someone’s healthcare journey, Dr. Carlson wants patients to feel heard, informed, and supported. Returning to Wyoming is especially meaningful for Dr. Carlson. After growing up in Wheatland and spending her college years in Laramie, practicing in Cody feels like a return to her roots. She was also drawn to Cody Regional Health by the organization’s culture, supportive medical staff, and the opportunity to develop meaningful relationships with patients and families in a smaller community. Outside of medicine, Dr. Carlson enjoys spending time with her husband and two daughters. Her family enjoys time outdoors camping and hiking, and she can be heard cheering on her daughters from the soccer sidelines. Music is another family tradition; Dr. Carlson and her daughters all play the fiddle and participate in Montana Fiddle Camp each summer.
