Dr. Poffenbarger is board certified in Neurosurgery by the American Board of Neurological Surgery. He earned his medical degree at Georgetown University Medical School in Washington, D.C. He completed his Internship at the Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, Washington and his Residency at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. Additionally, he has completed courses in complex spinal instrumentation and Gamma Knife training at the Barrow Neurologic Institute.

Dr. Poffenbarger bravely served his country for 22 years, as a member of the United States Army. He served as the Chief of Neurosurgery at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas, as well as Theatre Chief of Neurosurgery in Baghdad Iraq. His military decorations include a bronze star. Dr. Poffenbarger has written papers, abstracts and book chapters as well as presenting at many conferences and meetings.
