Peter Hassrick

Peter HassrickPeter was born in Philadelphia, raised in Denver and holds degrees in history (Bachelors, University of Colorado), art history (Masters, University of Denver) and humane letters (Honorary Doctorate, University of Wyoming).

He moved to Cody in 1976, and has lived here with a few hiatuses, since then.

Peter was director of the Buffalo Bill Center from 1976 to 1996. He went on to be founding director of the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, Santa Fe, the Founding director of the Charles M. Russell Center for Western Art Studies, University of Oklahoma, Norman and the director of the Petrie Institute of Western Art at the Denver Art Museum. He and his wife Buzzy retired to Cody in 2011.

Peter is an art historian and has, over the course of his career, written or co-authored over 25 books on western American art.

Peter has served on many boards including these local/regional ones: the Cody Chamber, the Park County Arts Council, the Yellowstone Institute, the Wyoming Arts Council and the Wyoming Humanities Council.

The Hassricks raised two children in Cody: son Philip is a medical doctor in Seattle and son Charles is a museum design and content specialist in Philadelphia.
